Lake Morton Nutrient Removal Demonstration Project
City of Lakeland, Florida
Lake Morton nutrient removal demonstration project
Owner: City of Lakeland
Engineer: Sustainable Water Infrastructure Group, LLC
Installation: Fall 2026
Technical Description:
PES + N Module
P + Organic Nitrogen Elimination
SWIG is proud to partner with the City of Lakeland on the Lake Morton Nutrient Removal Demonstration Project, showcasing our innovative nutrient reduction technology. This modular system utilizes patented media to effectively remove both phosphorus and organic nitrogen from stormwater, achieving projected removal rates of 80% total phosphorus and 62% total nitrogen annually. Installed at Lake Morton—part of the Peace River Watershed—this system not only improves water quality but also supports long-term sustainability with no required media replacement for nitrogen removal. This project highlights SWIG’s commitment to scalable, nature-integrated solutions that enhance water quality and ecological health.
Project Updates:
April 2025
City of Lakeland Awarded FDEP Grant to Improve Water Quality in Lake Morton with SWIG nature-based innovative media system. We are thrilled to partner with the City of Lakeland, Geosyntec, and ACT to install, operate and monitor a SWIG modular media treatment system along the Lake Morton shoreline. This demonstration project will be funded through FDEP’s Innovative Technology Grant and aimed at phosphorus and nitrogen reductions, key nutrients that are responsible for harmful algal blooms. This grant will provide crucial support to our ongoing efforts to enhance the water quality of Lake Morton, improve local ecosystems, and ensure the sustainability of this important water body for future generations. In addition, the FDEP will have another tool in the “toolbox” for protecting and preserving surface waters of the State. The collaboration and dedication from all parties involved have been instrumental in making this possible.
